Their 2024 début album of Schumann Piano Trios on the Deux-Elles label has garnered praise for its pioneering approach to romantic performance practice, and has been called “fascinating” (The Strad) and “endlessly satisfying” (Early Music America). Milwaukee native and Grammy award-winning violinist RAVENNA LIPCHIK thrives in a musical life shared between the worlds of modern and historical performance practices. She received her training at the San Francisco Conservatory and at Juilliard, from both of which she is a graduate of their modern and historical performance programs. Her upcoming season includes performances with acclaimed ensembles, such as Les Arts Florissants, The English Concert, Ensemble Pygmalion, and Trinity Baroque Orchestra, as well as an album release of Schumann piano trios with Trio Ilona. Ravenna plays a 1775 Lorenzo Storioni violin. Cellist and gambist KATE BENNETT WADSWORTH is devoted to historical performance of all periods, with a special research interest in 19th-century performing practice. She has appeared at festivals across Europe and North America with ensembles and given lecture-recitals and masterclasses at Juilliard , the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Orpheus Institute, and the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht. Her practice-led research project on the relationship between the Schumann Cello Concerto and the cellists of his time recently culminated in an annotated Bärenreiter edition of the concerto, a recording of her new arrangement of the work for cello and string quartet (on Deux-Elles), and an article on the astonishing ways 19th-century cellists reworked the concerto for public performance (Orpheus). She lives in Norwich, UK, where she co-directs the dynamic ensemble, Norwich Baroque, and runs a chamber music series, while supervising postgraduates in practice-led research at London's Guildhall School. She is co-owner of the UK label Deux-Elles, which released the Ilona Trio's acclaimed album of the Schumann trios played in this concert. Returning to the US for this performance, Kate borrowed a cello by an 18th-c. maker. Mutli-keyboardist YI-HENG YANG received her Doctorate from Juilliard, where she studied with Veda Kaplinksy, Robert McDonald, and Julian Martin. She also studied with Stanley Hoogland at the Sweelinck Conservatorium Amsterdam. Gramophone has described her as “superbly adept”, and Early Music Magazine singled out her “remarkable expressivity and technique”. Her work spans a vast spectrum of period instrument genres, including groundbreaking, provocative explorations of Romantic and Classical performance practice. “Free Spirits: Early-Romantic music on the Graf piano” (Deux-Elles Records; 2022), her début solo album, received a four-star rating by BBC Music Magazine. Anne E. Johnson (Classical Voice North America) writes of this recording on an original 19th-c. Viennese piano, “Yang’s performance of these early Romantic works on one of the finest instruments from that era takes us as close to the original experience as we can ever hope to come”. In 2023, she formed Trio Ilona with Ravenna Lipchik and Kate Bennett. She has performed widely in the UK and US, is on the faculty at Juilliard and, with Audrey Axinn and Maria Rose, is co-director of the Academy for Fortepiano Performance (Hunter, NY). www.YihengYangPianist.com ——————————————————————————— The mission of the the Frederick Collection of Historical Grand Pianos, ca. 1790-1928, is to acquaint musicians and the concert-going public with the sounds of pianos of the types, and often the makes, familiar to and played by the major composers.
